About us

The current Board of Surveying and Spatial Information (the Board) of New South Wales is constituted under the Surveying and Spatial Information Act 2002 and has been in operation in one form or another since 1837.

BOSSI registers land and mining surveyors and advises Government on matters relating to any aspect of surveying or the spatial information industry.

The Board consists of between 10 and 12 members, of whom:

  • one is to be the Surveyor General
  • one is to be a registered surveyor, being an officer of the Department of Finance Services and Innovation (DFSI), appointed by the Minister
  • three are to be persons appointed by the Minister on the nomination of such professional association of land surveyors as is prescribed by the regulations for the purposes of this section
  • one is to be a person appointed by the Minister on the nomination of such professional association of mining surveyors as is prescribed by the regulations for the purposes of this section
  • between one and three are to be persons appointed by the Minister on the nomination of such professional association of persons involved in the spatial information industry as is prescribed by the regulations for the purposes of this section
  • one is to be a person appointed by the Minister on the nomination of the Minister administering the Coal Mines Regulation Act 1982
  • one is to be a person appointed by the Minister on the nomination of the Minister administering the Fair Trading Act 1987
  • one is to be a person appointed by the Minister on the basis of his or her qualifications and experience in the training of surveyors.

The Surveyor General is to be the President of the Board.

Members can be appointed for successive terms.

Board subcommittees

The Board has established subcommittees to complete key tasks at the direction of the Board. These include the following;

  • Continuing Professional Development Committee
  • Training Committee
  • Finance and Audit Committee
  • Spatial Information Committee
  • Professional Audit and Investigation Committee
  • Discipline Committee
  • Land and Mining Surveyor Committee.

BOSSI is a statutory body which is attached to the Department of Finance and Services. The Board has developed a service level agreement with the department to assist it to carry out its functions in regard to financial obligations, employment of staff, supply of office facilities and general support.

As a Department of Finance and Services related entity, BOSSI adheres to the Business Ethics Statement on the Department of Finance and Services website.
