When completing projects for the Mining Surveyors' Assessment Procedures it is the Candidate Surveyors' responsibility to ensure that they are aware of all legislation affecting that project.

Acts and Regulations relating to surveying in NSW

Candidate Surveyors seeking registration as a surveyor permitted to carry out mining surveys in New South Wales should possess a sound knowledge of the following:

  • Mine Health and Safety Act 2004 and Regulations
  • Mine Safety (Cost Recovery) Act 2005 and Regulations
  • Mine Subsidence Compensation Act 1961 and Regulations

  • Coal Acquisition Act 1981 and Regulations
  • Coal Industry Act 2001 and Regulations
  • Coal Mine Health and Safety Act 2002 and Regulations
  • Coal Ownership (Restitution) Act 1990
  • Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and Regulations
  • Work Health and Safety (Mines) Act 2013 and Regulations
  • Survey and Drafting Directions for Mine Surveyors (NSW Coal) 2013
  • Survey and Drafting Directions for Mining Surveyors (Metalliferous and Extractive Industries) 2008

Survey and drafting directions - Coal mines

The survey and drafting directions on the Department of Industry and Resources and Energy website are to be followed by all mining surveyors in all open cut and underground operations. Issued by the Surveyor General on the advice of the Board of Surveying and Spatial Information, they provide for the hardcopy and digital recording, storage and preparation of the Mine Workings Plan and Mine Record Tracing.
